Hypoesthesia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hypoesthesia is a word for numbness. It is a reduced sense of touch. You might feel a partial loss of feeling in your skin. This can happen for many different reasons. It often starts with damage to your nerves. It can also happen if blood vessels get blocked. When blood cannot flow, it causes damage to the nearby tissues.

Doctors use imaging studies to see this damage.

There are several ways this numbness works in the body. One way is through decompression sickness. This happens when a person rises too fast from underwater. They might rise 20 feet or more very quickly. This causes air bubbles to form in the blood. These bubbles stop oxygen from reaching the tissues. Another way is through a trigeminal schwannoma. This is a tumor on the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is also called cranial nerve five. The tumor stops the nerve from sending sensations.

Many different illnesses can cause these feelings. Rhombencephalitis is an infection of the brainstem. It can involve the trigeminal nerve too. This can cause numbness in the face. Doctors may use antibiotics like ampicillin to fight this. Another condition is called beriberi. This is caused by a lack of thiamine. It can cause numbness in the feet or fingers. It can also affect the lips or the navel. There is also a cancer called IETSC. This involves the spinal cord.

Doctors have many tools to find the cause. They often start by asking many questions. They want to know where the numbness is. A doctor might tap lightly on your skin. They may use a CT scan to see inside. They might also use an MRI scan. They can perform nerve conduction studies. These studies measure electrical impulses in the nerves. They might even use a patellar reflex test.

Understanding hypoesthesia helps us understand our nervous system. It shows how nerves carry information to the brain. If the path is blocked, the information stops. This is like a road that is closed. If the road is blocked, cars cannot pass. In the body, the nerves are the roads. If a tumor or bubble blocks them, feeling stops. Doctors work to treat the main illness. This helps the body feel normal again.
