Hyeokgeose was the very first king of Silla. Silla was one of the three great kingdoms in Korea. His name has a special meaning. In old Korean, it meant "bright world." This name was used to show how radiant he was. He was also known by the title Geoseo-khan. This title meant "ruler" or "king" to the people living there. He started a royal line that lasted for a long time.

Legend tells a wonderful story about how he began. Long ago, six village leaders met to choose a new king. They lived in the valleys of Gyeongsang Province. One day, a strange light shone from the sky near a well. A white horse came down from the heavens. A leader named Sobeolgong found a large, gourd-shaped egg. A boy stepped out of that egg. When he was bathed, his body glowed with light. Even the birds and animals danced for him.

The leaders chose the boy to be their king at age 13. They named their new land Seorabeol. Hyeokgeose married Lady Aryeong, who was said to be born from a dragon. He ruled for about 60 years and helped his people. In 41 BC, he and his queen traveled to help farmers. They worked to make sure the harvests were good. People called them the "Two Saints" because they were so kind. In 37 BC, he built a city called Geumseong.

History gives us many specific details about his reign. In 32 BC, he built a royal palace inside his capital. In 20 BC, a leader from the Mahan confederacy asked for a tribute. Silla sent a minister named Hogong to handle this. Hogong was very brave and spoke truth to the other king. In 5 BC, a small state called East Okjeo sent a messenger. Hyeokgeose gave them 20 horses as a gift. He died in 4 AD when he was 73 years old.

Even though he lived a long time ago, his legacy is still here. Many people in Korea today have the last name Park. This name comes from the word for gourd. These families believe they are his descendants. He also helped build the foundation for a unified Korea. The kingdom of Silla grew to be very important in history. His story reminds us how one leader can start something huge.
