Hydrothermal vent

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hydrothermal vents are cracks on the ocean floor.

They let out very hot water from deep inside the Earth. This water is rich in dissolved minerals. When the hot water hits the cold sea, minerals fall out. This makes particles that build tall towers.

Some towers are called black smokers. They shoot out dark clouds of sulfur minerals. These can grow very tall. One vent named Godzilla reached 61 meters high!

Other vents are white smokers. They emit lighter minerals like calcium. These vents are usually further from the heat source.

These vents are busy homes for life. Tiny bacteria live there first. They use chemicals to make food. This is called chemosynthesis. This process helps other animals grow. You can find giant tube worms and shrimp there.

Some scientists think vents might have helped life start on Earth. They also think vents might exist on moons like Europa.
