Some people use a way called hydroponics. This method uses water to feed plants. The water has special nutrients, or plant food, inside it.

Roots can sit directly in this liquid. They can also rest in things like gravel or perlite. These materials do not have food, but they hold the plant steady.

Hydroponics helps us save a lot of water. It also lets plants grow very fast. This makes it a great way to grow food in small spaces. In the 1930s, people used this to grow food on rocky islands. There was no good soil there for farming. Today, we use it in large greenhouses to grow tomatoes and peppers.

Scientists are even testing it in space! NASA studies how to grow food in orbit. This could help people live on the Moon or Mars. In the future, plants might make oxygen and food for travelers.
