José de la Cruz was a very famous writer from the Philippines.

People often called him Huseng Sisiw. This name means "José the Chick" in Tagalog. He earned this nickname because of how he worked. When people asked him to write love poems, he asked for live chicks as payment. He was a man of great skill and talent. Many people in his time looked up to him. He was even given the title "Hari ng Mga Makata," which means "King of the Poets."

José learned many things through his own hard work.

He was born into a poor family in Tondo, Manila. Because of this, he could not afford to go to school. He taught himself how to read and write using Spanish primers. He studied many subjects like philosophy and theology. He also learned how to speak Tagalog, Spanish, Latin, and Greek. He even learned to write plays in a very short time. One time, he had to write a whole play in just one night.

His life began on December 21, 1746.

When he was only eight years old, he showed how smart he was. He met two Spanish priests while he was bathing in a river. He was able to talk to them in their own language. This amazed the priests very much. He lived through the time of Spanish colonization in the Philippines. He passed away on March 12, 1829. Even though he was a great writer, none of his works were published while he was alive.

José was a master of a poem style called corrido.

This is a special way of writing poems. He wrote many famous stories in this style. Some of his works include "Clarito, Adela at Florante" and "Doce Pares de Francia." He also wrote a famous story called "Historia Famoso de Bernardo Carpio." He was very careful with his writing. He always wanted his work to have deep meaning. He even wrote plays like "La Guerra Civil de Granada."

Many people remember him as a great teacher.

He was the mentor to Francisco Balagtas. Balagtas later became known as the "Father of Tagalog Literature." This shows how one great writer can help others grow. José's life is a story about how reading can change a person. He believed that books should have substance and meaning. His legacy lives on through the many poets he inspired.
