He has written more than 180 film screenplays since 1973. His work has traveled to big international film festivals. These include festivals in cities like Cannes, Toronto, and Berlin. People love his stories because they are so meaningful. He is known for helping to lead a golden age of Filipino movies during the 1980s.

Writing is a way to share ideas and feelings. Lee makes movie scripts, which are the plans used to film a story. He also writes short stories, novels, and plays for the stage. To make his characters feel real, he tells his students to live like them. They might spend a day acting as a beggar or a worker. This helps them understand how people think and act. He wants his students to use their imaginations to the fullest.

Lee's journey to becoming a writer was very difficult. He grew up in Daet, Camarines Norte, with his relatives. When he was young, his mother passed away. To follow his dreams, he took a bus to the big city of Manila. He worked hard as a waiter to find food and a place to sleep. He even studied at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Although he did not get a diploma, he later taught there.

His life changed during a time of political trouble in the Philippines. In 1974, Lee was arrested by soldiers. He and a friend named Bienvenido Lumbera were held at the Ipil Detention Center. They stayed there for one year before being released in 1975. Lee even got sick with rheumatic fever while he was detained. He used these hard memories to write his famous film, Himala. This movie was a huge success at the 1982 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Today, Lee is a very respected figure in the world of art. He has won over seventy awards for his many different works. In 2022, he received the title of National Artist of the Philippines.
