An architect named Imre Steindl designed the building. He won a contest to plan it. His design looked like the Palace of Westminster in London. Leaders wanted the building to show ties to Western Europe. Construction began in 1885. The building was not fully done until 1904. Workers used 40 million bricks to build it. They also used many precious stones and gold.

The building is very large and symmetrical. It has a big dome in the center. Inside, there are 691 rooms and 29 staircases. There are also 242 statues on the walls. These statues show famous leaders and military figures. One special part is the central hall. The Holy Crown of Hungary is on display there. Today, the government uses only a small part of the building. The rest is used for events and tours. It remains the largest building in Hungary.
