The Human Development Index, or HDI, is a tool used to measure how people live.

It does not just look at how much money a country has. Instead, it looks at human well-being and the choices people can make. This includes being well-fed, healthy, and having a home. It also includes the freedom to do things like work, vote, or join a community.

A higher score means a country has more potential for its people to thrive.

To find a score, the index looks at three main areas.

First, it looks at life expectancy at birth. This shows how long a person is expected to live. Second, it looks at education. It measures the average years of school adults have finished and how many years children are expected to attend. Third, it looks at income. This is measured as gross national income per person. These three parts are combined to create a single number for each country.

This way of measuring the world began in 1990.

A Pakistani economist named Mahbub ul-Haq created the idea. He wanted to change how leaders thought about progress. He believed development should focus on people rather than just counting money. He wanted to show that improvements in human well-being are just as important as economic growth. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) now manages these reports. They use his ideas to help guide policies around the world.

There are many specific details in these reports.

For example, the education part looks at how many years a child might stay in school. This is capped at 18 years, which is like earning a master's degree in many places. The income index uses a scale where $75,000 is a top score. In the year 2023, several countries had very high human development. Norway has held the top rank sixteen different times. Canada has also been ranked highest eight times.

While the HDI is very useful, some people have ideas on how to improve it.

Some say it does not look enough at the quality of schools or the environment. Others point out that it might not show if life is fair for everyone. To help with this, a version called the IHDI was introduced in 2010. This version looks at inequality to show the actual level of development. The HDI shows what is possible, while the IHDI shows what is actually happening for most people.
