The Human Development Index, or HDI, is a special way to rank countries.

It does not just look at money. Instead, it looks at how people live. A man named Mahbub ul-Haq started this work in 1990. He was an economist from Pakistan. He wanted to focus on people, not just wealth.

The HDI uses three main parts to find a score. First, it looks at life expectancy. This is how long people are expected to live. Second, it looks at education. It counts years of school for adults and children. Third, it looks at income. This is the money people earn.

A higher score means better life chances. This includes being healthy and having enough food. It also means having the freedom to do things. People can vote or join a community. In 2010, a new version was made. It looks at inequality. This helps show if life is fair for everyone. Some say the HDI needs more work. It does not measure things like the quality of schools. It also does not look at the environment.
