Hugo Grotius was a very gifted thinker from the Netherlands.

He was a lawyer, a poet, and a diplomat. He was also a theologian, which means he studied religion. He was a true prodigy from a young age. He started studying at Leiden University when he was only eleven.

By age sixteen, he had already published his first scholarly book. His family lived in Delft and had a long history in local government. His father was a well-known scholar and a translator. This early education helped him become a major leader in many different fields.

Grotius spent much of his life thinking about how nations should act. He wanted to find ways for countries to live together peacefully. He helped create the idea of international law. This is a set of rules that different countries follow. He believed that nations should follow laws rather than using force. He also changed how people thought about rights. Before him, people mostly thought of rights as belonging to objects. After Grotius, people saw rights as something that belongs to persons. This helped people understand their own ability to act in the world.

His work often came from real events that happened during his time. In 1603, a Dutch captain captured a Portuguese merchant ship.

This event led to a big legal debate. Grotius was asked to write a defense for the seizure. This work helped him think about the rules of war. He later wrote a famous book called *De jure belli ac pacis*. This book was about the laws of war and peace. He dedicated this important work to King Louis XIII of France. It helped shape how leaders think about conflict today.

One of his most famous ideas was about the ocean. In 1609, he published a book called *Mare Liberum*.

This title means "The Free Seas." He argued that the sea was international territory. He believed all nations should be free to use it for trade. Some countries, like England, did not agree with him at first. They wanted to claim parts of the sea for themselves. However, his idea of free seas is still used by many countries today. This helped make global trade much easier for everyone.

Life was sometimes very difficult for Grotius due to religious debates. He was involved in a big argument about religious policy in the Dutch Republic. Because of this, he was sent to Loevestein Castle.

He had to stay there as a prisoner. He managed to escape in a very clever way. He hid inside a large chest of books.

The chest was carried out of the castle to Gorinchem. Even after his escape, he continued to write many important books while living in France. His ideas eventually returned to popularity after the First World War.
