Hu Yaobang was a high-ranking leader in the People's Republic of China. He was a very important official for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

From 1981 to 1987, he held the top offices in the party. He first served as the Chairman from 1981 to 1982. After that, he became the General Secretary until 1987. He was known as a close ally of the leader Deng Xiaoping. Hu worked hard to change how China functioned during the 1980s.

Hu's early life was filled with many hard jobs and big changes. He was born into a poor peasant family in Hunan. Because he had no formal school, he taught himself to read. He joined the CCP in the 1930s when he was only fourteen. During the Long March, he was once a prisoner of war. He was one of 1,500 prisoners used as forced labor by the Ma clique.

He and 1,300 others secretly escaped to return to the communist forces in Yan'an.

His political career had many ups and downs due to internal struggles. During the Cultural Revolution, he was removed from his positions twice. One time, he was forced to work in a camp hauling large boulders. Another time, he was sent to herd cattle.

After Mao Zedong died, Hu was brought back to help the country. He led a program to fix mistakes from the past. He helped clear the names of over three million people who had been treated unfairly.

As a reformer, Hu wanted to change the economy and the government. He helped move China away from strict old policies toward new ideas. He wanted the government to be more open and honest with people. Hu also wanted more elections and more ways for people to vote.

In the Tibet Autonomous Region, he tried to give more power to local people. He even apologized for past mistakes made by the government in that area.

Some powerful party elders did not agree with Hu's new ideas. They thought his reforms were too much for the country. When students protested in 1986 and 1987, these opponents blamed Hu. This pressure caused him to resign from his top job in 1987.

After he died in April 1989, many students marched in Beijing to honor him. This led to large protests in Tiananmen Square later that year.
