Zhao became famous for his ideas about the economy. During the Great Leap Forward, many people in China faced hunger. Zhao worked to help farmers grow more food in Guangdong. He let families keep some of their own crops to sell. He also helped start new ways for businesses to work. These ideas were called market-oriented reforms. He used these methods to help the country recover from hard times. In Sichuan, his plans helped industrial production grow by 81 percent.

His career saw many ups and downs over many decades. He rose to high power after the Cultural Revolution ended. A leader named Deng Xiaoping helped him gain national fame. Zhao became the Premier of China in 1980. He also served as the general secretary of the party. He wanted to make the government more efficient. He also tried to fight corruption within the party. He believed in opening China up to the rest of the world.

However, Zhao faced many hard challenges from other leaders. In 1989, students held large protests in Tiananmen Square. Zhao supported the students during these protests. This caused a big disagreement with other top officials. Leaders like Li Peng and Chen Yun did not agree with him. Even Deng Xiaoping began to lose favor with Zhao. Because of these disagreements, Zhao lost his power in 1989.
