It sits near the center of the country. The city serves as a vital hub for medicine, education, and culture. It is one of Vietnam's six direct-controlled municipalities. This means it falls under the administration of the central government. The city is located between the North Central and South Central regions. It borders Quảng Trị to the north and Đà Nẵng to the south. To the west, it meets the Laos provinces of Salavan and Sekong. To the east, it meets the South China Sea.

The geography of Huế is quite varied and complex. The city contains four distinct zones. Mountains lie along the western and southwestern borders. These mountains cover more than 50% of the total area. They reach elevations between 500 and 1,480 meters. Between the mountains and the plains are the hills. These hills account for about one-third of the territory. They range from 20 to 200 meters in height. Some peaks reach 400 meters. The plains make up about 10% of the surface. They sit at elevations up to 20 meters above sea level.

Water plays a massive role in the landscape of Huế. The Perfume River flows through the center of the city. The city also contains the Tam Giang–Cau Hai lagoon. This is the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia. The lagoons are separated from the sea by sandbanks. They represent about 5% of the city's area. Additionally, the city has 128 kilometers of coastline. There are also over 200,000 hectares of forest. One protected area is the Bạch Mã National Park. This park covers 220 square kilometers. It includes a strictly protected core area, an administrative area, and a buffer zone.

The history of the region stretches back to the 4th century AD. The oldest ruins belong to the Kingdom of Lâm Ấp. The capital of that kingdom was called Kandarpapura. It was located on Long Tho Hill. Later, the Champa civilization left ruins like the city of Hoa Chau. In 1306, the King of Champa ceded two prefectures to Vietnam. These were the Ô and Lý prefectures. They were renamed Thuận and Hóa prefectures. This area became known as the Thuận Hóa region.
