This means it falls under the administration of the central government. The city is located between the North Central and South Central regions. It borders Quảng Trị to the north and Đà Nẵng to the south. To the west, it meets the Laos provinces of Salavan and Sekong. To the east, it meets the South China Sea.

The geography of Huế is quite varied and complex. The city contains four distinct zones. Mountains lie along the western and southwestern borders. These mountains cover more than 50% of the total area. They reach elevations between 500 and 1,480 meters. Between the mountains and the plains are the hills. These hills account for about one-third of the territory. They range from 20 to 200 meters in height. Some peaks reach 400 meters. The plains make up about 10% of the surface. They sit at elevations up to 20 meters above sea level.

Water plays a massive role in the landscape of Huế. The Perfume River flows through the center of the city. The city also contains the Tam Giang–Cau Hai lagoon. This is the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia. The lagoons are separated from the sea by sandbanks. They represent about 5% of the city's area. Additionally, the city has 128 kilometers of coastline. There are also over 200,000 hectares of forest. One protected area is the Bạch Mã National Park. This park covers 220 square kilometers. It includes a strictly protected core area, an administrative area, and a buffer zone.

The history of the region stretches back to the 4th century AD. The oldest ruins belong to the Kingdom of Lâm Ấp. The capital of that kingdom was called Kandarpapura. It was located on Long Tho Hill. Later, the Champa civilization left ruins like the city of Hoa Chau. In 1306, the King of Champa ceded two prefectures to Vietnam. These were the Ô and Lý prefectures. They were renamed Thuận and Hóa prefectures. This area became known as the Thuận Hóa region.

Huế became a major political center through many changes. In 1687, it became a provincial capital. It served as the capital of Đàng Trong from 1738 to 1775. The Nguyễn dynasty later made it the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. During this time, it was the site of the Imperial Citadel. The city was also known as Phú Xuân. In 1899, the name was officially changed to Huế. During the French colonial period, it served as the capital of the protectorate of Annam. The city saw significant fighting during the Vietnam War. It was the second-most northerly province of South Vietnam.

Today, Huế is a famous destination for travelers. It holds a UNESCO-designated complex of imperial palaces, tombs, and temples. This complex includes the Imperial City of Huế. Inside, you can find various palaces and shrines. The Forbidden Purple City was once the private home of the emperor.

Visitors can also see a replica of the Royal Theater. The city is undergoing many restorations. For example, the Kien Trung Palace is being fully reconstructed in 2024. In 2025, Huế became a direct-controlled municipality. This happened when it merged with the Thừa Thiên Huế province. The city was divided into two new districts: Phú Xuân and Thuận Hóa.

The climate in Huế is a tropical monsoon type. The weather is shaped by the local topography and altitude. In the plains and hills, the average annual temperature is 25 °C. In the mountains, the temperature is lower. There is a cool season from November to March. During this time, northeasterly winds blow through the region. January is the coolest month. The average temperature is 20 °C. However, temperatures in the plains can drop to 12 °C.
