It is the most populous city in Taiwan that does not hold the status of a special municipality. As of recent estimates, the city is home to approximately 476,273 inhabitants. Hsinchu is a coastal city that borders the Taiwan Strait to its west. It is surrounded by Hsinchu County to the north and east. To the south, the city shares a border with Miaoli County. The city is often called the "Windy City" due to its climate. This nickname comes from the strong northeastern monsoon winds that arrive during autumn and winter.

The geography of Hsinchu is defined by a humid subtropical climate.

This means the area experiences distinct seasonal patterns. A rainy season lasts from February through September. The heaviest rainfall occurs between late April and August during the southwest monsoon. The city also experiences heavy "plum rains" during May and early June. From June until September, the weather is typically hot and humid. Many people find the months of October through December to be the most pleasant. The region is also subject to natural hazards like typhoons and earthquakes.

The history of Hsinchu involves many different groups of people. The Taokas aborigines originally inhabited the area. In the 17th century, Spanish immigrants occupied northern Taiwan. Catholic missionaries reached a settlement called Tek-kham in 1626. Later, Han Chinese colonists founded a town in 1711. A group of over 180 people from Kinmen first camped near modern-day Dongqian Street. In 1878, the area was renamed Hsinchu. During the period of Japanese rule, the city was known as Shinchiku. At that time, it served as the seat of the Shinchiku Prefecture. This prefecture was much larger than the current city. It included present-day Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Taoyuan, and Miaoli.

Following the rule of the Republic of China in 1945, the city underwent many administrative changes. It was originally organized as a provincial city. In 1982, the Xiangshan Township merged into Hsinchu City. This created a new municipal government with three districts: East, North, and Xiangshan.

The East District is the largest by area at 33.576 square kilometers. The North District has a population of 152,504. The Xiangshan District covers 54.849 square kilometers. Since 1994, the city has transitioned toward a representative democracy. This transition included establishing regulations for local self-government. There is even a current movement to upgrade the city to a special municipality.

Today, Hsinchu is a global leader in high-tech industry. In 1980, the government established the Hsinchu Science Park. This park serves as an industrial center for semiconductor manufacturing. Semiconductors are small electronic components used in many devices. The park contains approximately 360 companies. Major global companies like TSMC, MediaTek, and United Microelectronics Corporation are headquartered here. The government has invested heavily in both software and hardware ventures since 1978. Because of this industry, the city is also nicknamed the "Garden City of Culture and Technology." In 2020, the city was classified as a "Sufficiency" level global city.

Education is another vital part of the city's identity. Hsinchu is a major educational hub in northern Taiwan. There are six universities located within this concentrated area. Two of the most prominent are National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and National Tsing Hua University.

These institutions are specifically focused on by the Taiwanese government. The city also hosts many elementary, middle, and high schools. This concentration of students and researchers supports the local science industry. It creates a strong link between academic study and technical work.

Visitors to Hsinchu can explore many different cultural and recreational sites. The Chenghuang Temple was built in 1747 and remains a popular place for prayer. For those interested in the sea, the Hsinchu Fish Harbor is a notable destination.
