History tells us that people lived here a long time ago. The Taokas aborigines were the first people in this area. Later, Spanish missionaries reached a settlement called Tek-kham in 1626. Han Chinese settlers founded a town here in 1711. They first camped near what is now Dongqian Street. The name Hsinchu was given to the area in 1878. Later, during Japanese rule, the city was called Shinchiku. It was even the seat of a large prefecture back then.

Hsinchu is also a great place for learning and culture. There are six different universities in this small area. Two very famous ones are National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
