He is most famous for The Howard Stern Show, a radio program that achieved massive popularity. From 1986 to 2005, his show was nationally syndicated on terrestrial radio. At its peak, the program attracted approximately 20 million listeners. Since 2006, Stern has broadcast his content on SiriusXM. He has often referred to himself as the "King of All Media" since 1992. This title acknowledges his various successes in radio, television, and book publishing.

Stern's interest in broadcasting began in early childhood. He expressed a desire to work in radio at the age of five. His father, Ben Stern, was a radio engineer who worked at WHOM in Manhattan.

Ben also co-owned Aura Recording Inc., a Manhattan studio. In his home basement, Howard used a microphone, tape machine, and turntable to practice. He recorded make-believe shows featuring various characters, sketches, and prank calls. He also observed professional voice actors, such as Don Adams, working in his father's studio. These early experiences motivated him to pursue a career in performance rather than just playing records.

His formal education focused on the technical and communicative aspects of media. Stern attended Boston University, where he studied communications. During his second year, he began working at the campus radio station, WTBU. He also earned a first-class radio-telephone operator license from the Federal Communications Commission in 1975. This certificate was a mandatory requirement for all radio broadcasters at that time. He graduated magna cum laude in 1976 with a 3.8 grade point average. His academic focus included a major in broadcasting and film, with a minor in English and speech.

Stern's professional career involved several different cities and roles. He held positions at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, and WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut. At WCCC, he met Fred Norris, who became his long-term writer and producer in 1981. Stern also worked at WWWW in Detroit, Michigan, where he won a Billboard Award for Album-Oriented Rock Personality of the Year. Following his time in Detroit, he moved to WWDC in Washington, D.C., in 1981. He used this period to plan a new style of show focused on honesty and team building. His goal was to remove the barriers between the host and the listener.

In 1985, Stern began a significant twenty-year tenure at WXRK in New York City. His morning show entered national syndication in 1986, reaching 60 different markets. His success led to significant financial milestones and industry recognition. In 2004, he signed a five-year contract with Sirius valued at $500 million. This deal made him one of the highest-paid figures in the history of radio. He has also won numerous awards, including winning Billboard's Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year for eight consecutive years. He was the first person to hold the number one morning show in both New York City and Los Angeles simultaneously.

Beyond radio, Stern has expanded into film and literature. He authored several books, including *Private Parts* (1993) and *Miss America* (1995). Both titles reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list and sold over one million copies. *Private Parts* was adapted into a biographical comedy film in 1997.

The film featured Stern and his staff playing themselves and grossed $41.2 million domestically. The film's soundtrack also reached number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. He released a third book, *Howard Stern Comes Again*, in 2019.

Stern's career has also been marked by legal and cultural influence. He became the most fined radio host due to content the Federal Communications Commission deemed indecent. These fines totaled $2.5 million and were issued to station owners. In more recent years, his work has shifted toward long-form interviews. He has interviewed notable figures such as Bruce Springsteen, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris. He also served as a judge on the television program *America's Got Talent* from 2012 to 2015. His career demonstrates the evolution of personal broadcasting into a multi-platform media empire.
