He was most famous for hosting The Rush Limbaugh Show. This program first aired in 1984. By 1988, the show was nationally syndicated on both AM and FM radio stations. Limbaugh became a major voice for conservative ideas in the United States during the 1990s. His work changed the landscape of political talk radio for millions of listeners.

Limbaugh's early career involved many different roles in the radio industry. In February 1971, he worked as a DJ at WIXZ in Pennsylvania. At that time, he used the airname "Bachelor Jeff" Christie. He faced several challenges during this period, including being fired from stations due to personality conflicts or management changes. He once considered a career in radio sales instead of being an on-air personality. Between 1975 and 1979, he worked at various stations in Kansas City, Missouri. During this time, he even worked in group sales for the Kansas City Royals baseball team.

His path to national fame began in earnest in 1984. He started a new show on KFBK in Sacramento, California. He decided to stop using a nickname and began broadcasting under his real name. In 1985, he started expressing more specific political opinions. A major change occurred in 1987 when the FCC repealed the fairness doctrine. This rule previously required stations to provide airtime for opposing views on controversial topics. After the repeal, Limbaugh was able to broadcast editorial commentary without presenting opposing views. This helped him grow his influence significantly.

In 1988, Limbaugh's career expanded through national syndication. He secured a slot on the ABC Radio Network to replace Owen Spann.

His national program debuted on 50 stations in August 1988. Within just three months, the show had expanded to 100 stations. He also maintained a flagship presence at WABC-AM in New York City. Eventually, his program reached over 650 radio stations across the country. His style was often described as shifting between a serious lecturer and a political performer.

Limbaugh was a highly successful businessman and author. He wrote seven books during his lifetime. His first two books, The Way Things Ought to Be and See, I Told You So, reached The New York Times Best Seller list. In 1995, he launched a necktie brand called the No Boundaries Collection. This brand was sold in nearly 1,500 retail outlets by 1996. In its first year, the company sold more than $5,000,000 worth of ties. He was also one of the highest-paid figures in American radio history. In 2018, Forbes listed his annual earnings at $84.5 million.

His massive reach is reflected in his listener statistics. By December 2019, Talkers Magazine estimated his weekly audience reached 15.5 million people.

These included discussions on race, LGBT matters, feminism, sexual consent, and climate change. In 2003, he briefly worked as a football commentator for ESPN. However, he resigned after making controversial comments regarding the press coverage of quarterback Donovan McNabb. These remarks led to accusations of racism. His career was marked by both immense popularity and intense public disagreement. He passed away on February 17, 2021.
