Have you ever heard someone talk about horsepower? It is a way to measure power. Power tells us how fast work gets done.

A man named James Watt used this idea. He was an engineer in Scotland. In the late 1700s, he made steam engines. He wanted to show how strong they were. He compared them to horses.

Watt studied what a horse could do. He saw a horse could turn a wheel 144 times in one hour. He used this to set a standard. Today, we use different kinds of horsepower. One kind is called imperial horsepower. Another kind is called metric horsepower. Metric horsepower is the power needed to lift 75 kilograms. This lift happens one metre up in one second.

We use this word for many things now. It helps us measure motors and engines. It also helps us measure electric motors. Most countries now use a unit called a watt. But horsepower is still a very common way to talk about power.
