Radian per second

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Things can spin in circles. We can measure how fast they turn. This speed is called angular velocity. Scientists use a unit called the radian per second.

One radian per second means the turn grows by one radian every second. A radian is a way to measure a turn. This unit also shows angular frequency. Angular frequency is how often something spins.

We can link this to other ways of measuring. One hertz is one full cycle every second. One hertz is the same as 2π radians per second. This is because one full cycle is 2π radians. One radian per second is about 9.55 revolutions per minute. This means how many times it spins in a minute.

Engineers use this unit to find power. They look at a spinning shaft. They multiply the speed by the torque. Torque is a force that turns things. When they use these units, the math is easy. It helps them work with machines.
