Joule-second

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists use a special unit to measure certain things. It is called the joule-second. You can write it as J⋅s. This unit links two other units together. It uses the joule and the second. The joule measures energy. The second measures time.

One way to use this unit is for angular momentum. This is a way to measure how things spin. To find it, we use two parts. We use the moment of inertia. We also use angular velocity, which is how fast something spins. When we multiply them, we get a joule-second.

This unit also helps us study very tiny things. It appears in quantum mechanics. This is the study of the smallest parts of our world. It is used in the Planck constant. This constant shows the energy of a wave. We find it by dividing energy by frequency. The result is a joule-second.

Do not confuse this with a watt. A watt is a joule per second. A watt measures power. Power shows how fast work happens. The joule-second is different. It is a very useful tool for science.
