Some birds fly to warm lands in the winter. Other birds stay in one place all year.

These birds love to eat insects. They use their long, strong bills to find food. A hoopoe will stride over open ground. It uses its bill to probe the dirt. It can find larvae and beetles under leaves.

Sometimes they even use their bills to lift heavy stones.

Hoopoes are good parents. They build nests in holes in trees or walls. The female sits on the eggs to keep them warm. This is called incubation.

To stay safe, the birds make a smelly liquid. It smells like rotting meat. This helps keep hungry predators away from the nest. The young chicks can even hiss like snakes to scare intruders.
