Some groups move to warm places during the winter months. Other groups stay in the same home all year round. Some birds even fly very high over the Himalayan mountains.

Finding food is a very important job for a hoopoe. Most of their diet is made of insects like beetles and ants.

They like to walk across open ground to find a snack. A hoopoe will use its long bill to poke into the dirt. They can even use their bills to lift up heavy stones. This helps them find larvae or pupae hiding underneath. If a bug is too big, they hit it against a stone to kill it.

People have studied these birds for a very long time. In 1758, a scientist named Carl Linnaeus named the group Upupa.

Hoopoes have many interesting ways to stay safe. They build nests in holes in trees, cliffs, or even old walls.

The female bird sits on the eggs to keep them warm. This part of the life cycle is called incubation. To protect their babies, the birds make a liquid that smells like rotting meat. This bad smell keeps hungry predators away from the nest. The young chicks can even hiss like snakes to scare intruders away.

These birds have appeared in many stories throughout history. In Ancient Egypt, they were used as symbols for royal heirs.

In the Quran, the hoopoe is mentioned alongside King Solomon. Some people in Europe once thought they were thieves. In other places, like Scandinavia, people thought they brought news of war. Even though stories change, the hoopoe remains a fascinating part of our natural world.
