When you wear the hood up, it covers your head and neck. It can even cover part of your face. Most hoodies come in two main styles. You might wear a pullover, which has no zipper. These often have one large pocket on the front called a kangaroo pocket.

Other hoodies have a zipper down the middle. These usually have two separate pockets on each side. Most styles also include a drawstring to adjust the hood opening. People wear them to look stylish or to stay safe from wind and rain.

How a hoodie works is quite simple and helpful. The hood acts as a shield against the weather. You can pull it tight using the strings. This keeps the warmth close to your body. Many people wear them as an extra layer under a heavy coat during winter.

The modern hoodie we know today started in the 1930s. A company named Champion made them in Rochester, New York. They were made for laborers working in freezing warehouses. This means the hoodie was originally a tool for hard work. It has been around for over ninety years.

Many different cultures have shaped how we see hoodies. In the 1970s, hip hop culture in New York made them popular. Later, the 1976 film Rocky helped make them a symbol of sports.
