It is widely recognized as the heart of the American film industry. Many people use nicknames like "Tinseltown" or the "dream factory" to describe it. These names reflect the glittering image of the movie business. Major studios like Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. are located here.

The area remains a global center for entertainment and culture.

The history of the district began with land development in the late 1800s. In February 1887, Harvey H. Wilcox purchased 120 acres of land.

His wife, Daeida Wilcox, suggested the name "Hollywood." She believed the name sounded pleasant and brought good luck. Later, a developer named H. J. Whitley helped the area grow. He built the Hollywood Hotel in 1902 to attract new residents.

Whitley also installed electricity and built roads to connect the region.

Hollywood underwent several important political changes in its early years. It was incorporated as an independent municipality on November 14, 1903. Shortly after, in 1904, voters decided to ban the sale of liquor. In 1910, the city voted to merge with Los Angeles. This merger was necessary to secure a reliable water supply. It also provided access to the Los Angeles sewer system.

Following the annexation, Prospect Avenue was renamed Hollywood Boulevard.

The motion picture industry migrated to the area for specific practical reasons. In the early 1900s, Thomas Edison held many film equipment patents in New Jersey. His company often sued filmmakers to stop their productions. Moving to Los Angeles allowed filmmakers to evade these legal battles more easily. The region also offered ideal weather and diverse natural settings.

The Nestor Film Company became the first studio in 1911. By the 1920s, Hollywood had become the fifth-largest industry in the United States.

During the 1930s, the film industry reached a stage of vertical integration. This means companies controlled production, distribution, and exhibition all at once. This system allowed Hollywood to produce 600 films per year. The famous Hollywood Sign was erected in the hills in 1923.

It originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND" to advertise a housing development. In 1949, the sign was repaired and changed to simply say "HOLLYWOOD."

Modern Hollywood features many landmarks that celebrate the entertainment industry. The Hollywood Walk of Fame opened in 1960 to honor significant artists.

The Dolby Theatre serves as the site for the annual Academy Awards. The iconic Capitol Records Building was also constructed in 1956.

While the area faced economic decline in the 1980s, it has undergone revitalization. Since 2000, private and public projects have helped the district grow again.

Recently, the film industry in the region has faced new challenges. There has been a trend of outsourcing production to other places. Locations like Georgia, the United Kingdom, and Ontario offer aggressive tax incentives. Local filming activity saw a significant decrease between 2021 and 2025. On-location shoot days fell from 37,709 to 19,694 during that period. To help the industry, California passed Assembly Bill 132 in 2025. This law increased the annual cap for film tax credits to $750 million.
