He was a teacher, an explorer, and a politician. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1875. His family had a long history of missionary work. Bingham went to many famous schools for his education. He earned degrees from Yale and UC Berkeley. He also earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1905. This training helped him become a leader in studying history.

Bingham spent much of his career teaching history. He taught at Harvard and then at Princeton University. Later, he became a lecturer at Yale University. He was a pioneer in studying Latin American history. In 1908, he wrote about how to research this field. He looked at libraries and old records in many places. He wanted to find more about the history of South America. This work led him to go on big trips to explore.

In 1911, Bingham led a famous trip to Peru.

He wanted to find the lost capital of the Inca people. Local farmers helped guide him through the mountains. On July 24, 1911, a guide named Melchor Arteaga led him to Machu Picchu. Bingham thought it was a religious center. Later, scientists found it was actually a royal estate. He also found other sites like Vitcos and Vilcabamba.

Other people like Thomas Payne and Stuart McNair also visited earlier. Bingham took many items from the site back to Yale. These included ceramics, mummies, and bones. Peru later asked for these 40,000 items to be returned. Yale began returning the objects in 2012.

Bingham also had a very busy life in politics and the military.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Service. In 1924, he was elected governor of Connecticut. He only served for one single day! This happened because he was also elected to the U.S. Senate. He chose to serve in the Senate instead. His books about his travels became very popular. His stories even helped inspire famous movie characters like Indiana Jones.
