Some followers use the name Sanatana Dharma for their faith.

The word Hindu has a long history. It did not start as a religious name. It began as a name for a place. The word comes from Sindhu. This is a word for a large body of water. It was the name for the Indus River.

Long ago, it described people living near that river.

Over time, the meaning changed. It began to describe a group of people. This group was different from those who followed Islam. By the 1800s, people used the term for many Indian religions. This included Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains. Today, scholars say these groups are seen as separate.

There are about 1.17 billion Hindus. They are the third largest religious group. Most Hindus live in India and Nepal.
