Himilco was a famous sailor from Carthage. He lived a long time ago. He was likely a member of the Magonid family. Some think he was the brother of Hanno. Hanno was another explorer who sailed south.

Himilco sailed into the north. He went past the Pillars of Heracles. These are the rocks at the Strait of Gibraltar. He sailed along the Atlantic coast. He may have reached Brittany or the British Isles. Some people think he reached Ireland too. He might have even seen the Albiones. This was an ancient name for Britain.

His trip was very hard. He wrote about his journey in a book. We do not have his book today. We only know what other writers said about it. They said the sea was very dangerous. He saw thick fog and big waves. He saw seaweed that slowed his ship. He even wrote about sea monsters. Some think he told these scary stories on purpose. He might have wanted to keep other sailors away from his trade routes.
