Hiawatha worked with a man called the Great Peacemaker. The Peacemaker wanted all the tribes to live in peace. He had a hard time speaking. Because of this, he needed a spokesperson. Hiawatha was a very skilled speaker. He spoke for the Peacemaker to share a message of peace.

A mean leader named Tadodaho caused much trouble. He did not want peace. He even caused the death of Hiawatha's wife and daughters. This made Hiawatha very sad. He used wampum to help heal his grief. Wampum are beads made from shells.

Together, Hiawatha and the Peacemaker made the Great Law of Peace. They used wampum belts to record these laws. The Hiawatha Belt shows the five nations joined together. The white line on the belt shows their unity. People still tell the story of Hiawatha today through songs and books.
