Pōmare I was a great leader in Tahiti. He lived a long time ago. He was born around the year 1753. He was the son of a chief named Teu. Pōmare worked hard to bring people together. He joined many small groups into one big kingdom. This happened between 1788 and 1791. He was the first king of a unified Tahiti. His kingdom included islands like Moorea and Mehetia.

In 1789, a ship called the Bounty visited his land. The crew had a big fight on the ship. This was called a mutiny. Some men from the ship stayed in Tahiti. Pōmare gave them protection. Later, a British ship came to find them. Pōmare worked with the British leaders. He let the men be taken back to England.

In 1791, Pōmare stepped down as king. He gave the crown to Pōmare II. This new king was still very young. Pōmare I stayed in power to help him. He was a guardian for the young king. He did this until 1803. Pōmare I died in September of 1803.
