geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Heze is a major prefecture-level city located in the Shandong province of China. It sits at the westernmost edge of the province. To its east, it borders the city of Jining. To its south and west, it borders the provinces of Anhui and Henan. The city covers a total area of 12,238.62 square kilometers. It governs two districts, seven counties, and two development zones. These divisions are further divided into 158 township-level units.

The climate in Heze is influenced by monsoon patterns. It sits between the humid subtropical and humid continental zones. This creates four distinct seasons throughout the year. Spring is warm but remains nearly rainless. Summer is characterized by hot and humid weather. Most of the annual precipitation, nearly 70%, occurs between June and September. Autumn is crisp, while winter is cold and dry. The city receives 2,411 hours of bright sunshine annually. However, the region is prone to meteorological disasters like floods and droughts.

Heze has a deep and complex history. The name Heze was officially chosen in 1735 during the Qing dynasty. It was named after an ancient marsh called Heze. This body of water was once located in the area. The marsh was named after He Mountain. In August 1949, Heze was moved from the Shandong peninsula. It was given to the experimental province of Pingyuan. This change lasted just over three years before it returned to Shandong. In April 1953, Heze and Jining grew larger. They gained counties from the former Huxi prefecture after it was abolished.

The city is widely known as the capital of peonies. Peony cultivation in the region began during the Sui Dynasty. It flourished during the Tang Dynasty and again during the Ming Dynasty. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Heze became the center of peony cultivation in China. The peony is the official city flower of Heze. It is also called the "king of flowers" in the Bencao Gangmu. There are nine distinct types of peonies based on color. These include red, white, purple, yellow, blue, green, black, pink, and multi-colored varieties.

Peonies are vital to the local economy. Heze is the largest center in China for growing this national flower. In fact, over 30% of the city's GDP comes from the sale of peonies. The Mudan District was even named after the flower. The Caozhou Peony Garden is a major site for visitors. It is the largest garden in Heze and contains the most varieties. This connection between nature and industry defines much of the city's character.

Heze offers many historical and cultural sites for exploration. The One Hundred Lion Square features a 14-meter high archway. It has a column carved with 100 stone lions in different postures. This site represents ancient architectural skill and artistic value. Visitors can also explore the Shui Hu Hero City. This area is known for martial arts and ancient buildings. It serves as a museum for ancient Chinese residences. Other notable locations include the Dingtao Han Tomb and the Shanxian Archway.

Local food is another significant part of Heze culture. Shanxian lamb soup was first made in 1807. It is known for being fresh and fragrant. Another unique treat is the peony cake. This dessert was designed by Wu Zetian. It is made by mashing flowers with rice and steaming them. Other specialties include Pijia roast chicken and Caozhou sesame cake. The Ju Ye pot of soup is also a very popular traditional food.

Modern Heze is well-connected through various transportation networks. The city uses four main modes: railway, highway, shipping, and aviation. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway Line and the Xinyan Line cross the territory. There are eight county-level railway stations in the area. High-speed services run through the Heze railway station and Heze East railway station. The Heze Mudan Airport opened on April 2, 2021. These systems help support the city's large population of 10.58 million people.
