During the Gilded Age, she became a famous financier. People often called her the "Queen of Wall Street." This was because she was very good at managing money. She was also very brave in a business world run by men. Her ability to save cash helped the whole country during hard times. She was a pioneer of a way of investing called value investing. This means buying things when they are cheap and waiting for their value to grow.

Hetty had a very specific way of making her fortune. She followed a rule to buy when things were low. She waited until people were desperate to buy them before she sold. This is often called a "buy low, sell high" strategy. She also kept a large amount of cash ready to use. She looked for railroad stocks and mortgage bonds to invest in. She would study every bit of information before making a choice. She believed in thinking about a deal overnight before finishing it.

Hetty learned about money from her family in Massachusetts. Her family was very wealthy from the whaling industry.

When she was only six, she read financial news to her father. By the age of thirteen, she was the family bookkeeper. This job meant she kept track of all the money and trades. She learned how to read ledgers and trade different goods. She also spent time with her grandfather learning his business methods. These early lessons helped her manage huge amounts of money later.

Her life was full of big numbers and important dates. She was born on November 21, 1834, in New Bedford. In 1867, she married Edward Henry Green and moved to London. During her time in London, she earned $1.25 million in just one year. In 1907, a major financial panic hit the United States. Hetty had predicted this panic would happen three years early. She used her large reserves of money to lend to New York City. This helped the economy stay stable during the crisis.

Hetty was a very different person from other wealthy people. She did not care about fancy parties or expensive clothes. Some people called her a miser because she lived very simply. They even gave her the nickname "the Witch of Wall Street."

She often wore the same dress until it was worn out. She also did not like to pay for extra things like hot water. Even though she was very rich, she lived in simple places. She believed every woman should know how to manage her own money.
