He chose the name to show high standards of quality. He wanted his oil to be reliable for everyone. This company eventually became the largest corporation in the United States. It had a massive impact on how much oil people could buy.

The company grew by using many different ways to work.

First, they bought up other oil firms. Rockefeller would buy a competitor and then decide what to do with it. He often shut down the ones that were not efficient. He also made special deals with railroads to save money. For example, the Lake Shore Railroad gave them a huge discount. They only had to pay one cent per gallon. This helped the price of kerosene drop from 58 cents to 26 cents. These low prices made customers very happy.

In 1882, the leaders found a new way to organize.

They created the Standard Oil Trust on January 2. A group of 41 investors signed a special agreement. They put their shares into one big pool. Nine trustees managed all 40 of these companies together. This new group was worth $70 million at the start. This way of organizing was so successful that other large businesses copied it. It allowed them to manage a very large enterprise easily.

Many important people and numbers shaped this history.

John D. Rockefeller was the most important leader. By 1904, the group controlled 91% of oil refining in the U.S.

They also controlled 85% of final oil sales. A writer named Ida Tarbell wrote a book about them. Her work helped lead to a big court case. In 1911, the Supreme Court ruled that the company was unfair. The court ordered the giant group to break into 39 smaller pieces. These new companies were worth $375 million in total.

Even though the big trust broke up, its pieces stayed strong.
