The state covers an area of 21,114.73 square kilometers. With over six million residents, it is the fifth most populous state in Germany. It ranks seventh in terms of total land area among the sixteen German states.

The name Hesse has deep roots in ancient tribal history. The term derives from the name of the Hessians, who were a group of people living in the region. These people were part of an older tribe known as the Chatti.

In the 7th century, the name appeared as Chassi. By the 8th century, it was recorded as Hassi or Hessi. The modern name is a shorter version of an older compound name meaning "land of the Hessians." This etymology links the modern state directly to the Germanic tribes of the past.

Human presence in the region stretches back to the Upper Paleolithic period. Archaeologists have found stone tools in southern Hesse near Rüsselsheim. These tools suggest that Pleistocene hunters lived there about 13,000 years ago. A fossil hominid skull was also discovered near the village of Rhünda. This find has been dated to approximately 12,000 years ago. One of the most significant prehistoric sites is the Züschen tomb.

As time passed, different groups fought for control of the Hessian lands. The Romans established a military camp at Dorlar. They also built a civil settlement at Waldgirmes. This settlement was likely intended to house the provincial government for the right bank of Germania. However, the Romans abandoned these sites after the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9. Following this, the Franks moved into the area. By the mid-7th century, the Franks had established themselves as overlords. They built various fortifications, such as the Büraburg, to resist pressure from the Saxons. The Büraburg was a massive construction featuring one kilometer of walls and trenches.

The political structure of Hesse changed significantly during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the 12th century, the region was part of the Landgraviate of Thuringia. After the War of the Thuringian Succession, the lands were split. This led to the creation of the new Landgraviate of Hesse. Over time, the territory divided into several different lines. These included Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt.

These two lines became the core states within the Hessian lands. In the 18th century, Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse-Kassel used his military to fund his government. He loaned 19,000 soldiers to Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. These soldiers were known in English as "Hessians."

Modern Hesse was shaped by the reorganisations of the 19th and 20th centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars, the French Republic occupied parts of the region. This led to the mediatisation of many territories in 1803. This process reorganized many small states into larger ones. The current borders of the state were finally delineated in 1945. This occurred under American occupation as "Greater Hesse." Today, the state is a major part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan area.

Hesse remains a place where history and modern science meet. The state's influence extends even to the periodic table. In 1997, the synthetic element hassium, number 108, was named after Hesse. This name was chosen following a scientific proposal in 1992. The state continues to be a center of activity, from the busy streets of Frankfurt to the historic parks of Kassel.
