Wiesbaden forms a large urban area, or conurbation, with the nearby city of Mainz. This combined area is part of the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. This massive region includes cities like Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, and Hanau. Together, these connected areas hold more than 5.8 million people.

The geography of Wiesbaden is defined by its position near the Rhine river. The city sits on the northern bank of the Upper Rhine.

To the north, the Taunus mountain range rises above the landscape. The city center, or Stadtmitte, sits in a wide valley at the foot of these mountains. This valley is formed by the Salzbach, which is a small stream that flows into the Rhine. Several other streams, such as the Wellritzbach and the Schwarzbach, also drain into the Salzbach. The landscape is bounded by different heights, including the Mosbacher Mountain to the south.

The city contains 15 mineral springs located in the center. Fourteen of these are hot springs. These springs are very productive, yielding about 2 million liters of water every day. This makes Wiesbaden the second-most productive spa town in Germany, after Aachen. Because the Taunus mountains protect the city to the north and west, the climate remains mild. Some people call it the "Nice of the North" due to this weather and its architecture.

The history of the area stretches back to the Neolithic era. However, recorded history began with a Roman fort built in 6 AD.

The Romans called the settlement Aquae Mattiacorum, meaning "Waters of the Mattiaci." They used the thermal springs for their horses and perhaps for red hair dye. The Roman Empire also built the Limes Germanicus, a line of fortifications, in the nearby Taunus. Later, Germanic tribes like the Alamanni controlled the area. After the Franks defeated the Alamanni in 496, the Franks took control of the region.

During the Middle Ages, Wiesbaden was tied to the House of Nassau. It was a territory within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1232, it became an imperial city, or Reichsstadt. However, the city faced many challenges, including destruction during wars in the 13th century. In 1525, the city lost its special privileges after participating in the German Peasants' War. It later became a Protestant city in 1543. The Thirty Years' War was also very difficult for the city. Chronicles from 1648 suggest that only about 40 residents remained after the conflict.
