During the Middle Ages, Wiesbaden was tied to the House of Nassau. It was a territory within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1232, it became an imperial city, or Reichsstadt. However, the city faced many challenges, including destruction during wars in the 13th century. In 1525, the city lost its special privileges after participating in the German Peasants' War. It later became a Protestant city in 1543. The Thirty Years' War was also very difficult for the city. Chronicles from 1648 suggest that only about 40 residents remained after the conflict.
In the 19th century, Wiesbaden underwent major changes. In 1806, it became the capital of the Duchy of Nassau.

The modern landscape of Wiesbaden is a mix of urban and natural spaces. About 27.4% of the city is covered by large forest areas.
