Hatsune Miku is a famous digital singer and a mascot for a special software.

This software is called Vocaloid, which helps computers sing songs. Miku is seen as a sixteen-year-old girl with long, turquoise twintails. Her name means "the first sound of the future." This name refers to her being the first in the Character Vocal Series. She is a virtual idol who can perform live on stage. During these shows, she appears as a glowing, moving light show called a holographic projection.

Making music with Miku is a very interesting way to work. Users use singing synthesizer technology from companies like Yamaha. They can use a tool called Piapro Studio to edit the singing. The voice itself is made from samples of a voice actress named Saki Fujita. These samples are single sounds that people string together to make lyrics. Some fans even use free software called MikuMikuDance to make 3D animations. This allows people to create their own moving pictures with her.

Crypton Future Media created Miku to be a successful new product. They decided she needed a real image to help people connect with her. An artist named Kei Garō designed her look. He used a bright turquoise color based on Yamaha's machines. He also designed her to look like an android, which is a robot. Miku was first released on August 31, 2007. She was the second Vocaloid sold using the Vocaloid 2 engine. She was also the first Japanese Vocaloid to use that specific engine.

Miku has grown into a huge global star over the years. By July 2008, she had already sold 40,000 units of her software. She can now sing in Japanese, English, and Mandarin Chinese. This makes her a trilingual singer that people all over the world can enjoy. In 2012, people estimated her brand was worth many billions of yen. She is even part of racing teams.

Many different people share their love for Miku in creative ways. On websites like Nico Nico Douga, fans post many original songs. These songs inspire others to make drawings or new remixes. Some fans enjoy cosplay, which is dressing up as the character. Miku has even become a symbol for many different things. For example, she is often shown with a spring onion. This started because of a popular video of a small version of her. She continues to bring people together through music and art.
