Harrison White was a very important thinker in the field of sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live and act in groups. White did not just look at what people thought or felt. Instead, he looked at the patterns of how people connect to one another. He called these patterns social structures. He believed that the links between people were just as important as the people themselves.

This way of thinking helped change how scientists study society.

White used math to help explain these social connections. He created special mathematical models to map out how groups work. One of his famous ideas was called a blockmodel. He also developed a concept called vacancy chains to show how people move through social roles. These tools allowed researchers to see the invisible paths that connect us.

By using math, he turned social ideas into something that could be measured and studied clearly.

His journey into sociology was quite unique. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1930. He first studied theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. He even earned a doctorate in physics there in 1955. Later, he decided to study the social sciences. He went to Princeton University to earn a second doctorate in sociology.

A teacher named Karl Deutsch helped encourage him to make this big change.

White worked at many famous universities during his long career. He taught at the University of Chicago and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1963, he moved to Harvard University. There, he led a major change known as the "Harvard Revolution." This movement focused on social networks rather than just individual traits.

Later, he joined Columbia University in 1988. He became the Giddings Professor of Sociology and led the New York School of relational sociology.

Many people respect the work White did during his life. In 1992, he held a very special named position at Columbia. He also wrote a famous book called "Identity and Control." This book was first published in 1992 and was rewritten in 2008. In 2011, he received a very high award from the American Sociological Association.

His ideas about how culture and networks mix still help researchers today.
