He wanted to understand how human life changes over time. He believed that all human activity on Earth was one big culture. This was a very important idea in his work.

White said culture has three main parts. The first part is technology. The second part is sociology, or how people live in groups. The third part is ideology, which means shared ideas.

He believed technology was the most important part of all. Technology includes tools, machines, and chemical instruments. It also includes the ways people use these techniques. These tools help humans solve hard jobs for survival.

White had a specific way of looking at technology. He thought technology is a way to capture energy. Humans need energy to meet their needs and stay alive. He said societies that capture more energy are more advanced. They also use that energy more efficiently. This helps them have an advantage over other groups. This way of thinking is called a materialist approach.

It focuses on the physical things people use.

White was born in Salida, Colorado, in 1900. He lived until 1975. In 1929, he became interested in Marxism. He even visited the Soviet Union during that time. He once wrote for a newspaper using a fake name. His ideas sometimes caused arguments with other thinkers. One man named Robert Lowie even disagreed strongly with him.

These debates helped shape the field of anthropology.

In 1959, White published a very important book. The title was "The Evolution of Culture: The Development of Civilization to the Fall of Rome." This book made people interested in social evolution again. His ideas are part of a group called neoevolutionists. He showed how tools and energy link to how civilizations grow. His work helps us see how humans change the world.
