He is recognized as a cinematic cultural icon due to his massive success at the box office. Remarkably, Ford is one of only two actors in history to star in a number one film across six consecutive decades. This achievement makes him one of the highest-grossing actors in the world. His career has earned him many prestigious honors. These include five Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. He also received a nomination for an Academy Award for his work in the film Witness. In 2024, he was officially honored as a Disney Legend.

Ford's early life was shaped by a diverse background and a quiet start in the arts. He was born on July 13, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Dorothy, was a former radio actress. His father, John William "Christopher" Ford, worked in advertising and was also a former actor. Ford grew up with a mix of Irish and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he studied philosophy. Although he was interested in drama, he was expelled from college for plagiarism just four days before graduation.

His path to stardom was not immediate, and he faced many early challenges. In the 1960s, Ford worked in minor, often uncredited roles. His first known appearance was as a bellhop in the 1966 film Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round. During this period, he struggled to find steady work in Hollywood. To support his wife and two young sons, he became a self-taught professional carpenter. He built structures for clients, including the writers Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne. This period of manual labor provided stability while he pursued acting opportunities.

Everything changed through a series of connections with influential filmmakers. Casting director Fred Roos helped secure Ford an audition with director George Lucas. Initially, Lucas only hired Ford to read lines for other actors auditioning for Star Wars. However, Lucas was so impressed by Ford's performance that he cast him as Han Solo. This role in the 1977 space opera film brought Ford global stardom. He went on to play Han Solo in five different films within that franchise.

Ford became famous for portraying iconic characters in several major film franchises. He played the heroic archaeologist Indiana Jones, starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. He also played Rick Deckard in the science fiction film Blade Runner in 1982. While Blade Runner was not an immediate success, it later became a highly regarded cult classic. Ford also played the character Jack Ryan in the action thrillers Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. More recently, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus Ross in the 2025 film Captain America: Brave New World.

Beyond his roles as an action hero, Ford has demonstrated great dramatic range. His performance in the 1985 thriller Witness earned him his only Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He has also appeared in various other films, such as The Fugitive and The Age of Adaline. In recent years, he has expanded into television work. He starred in the western series 1923 and the comedy series Shrinking. His work on Shrinking earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
