Following this, he moved to London to work in television and smaller films.

His early life in Ballymena, County Antrim, provided a complex backdrop to his development. He was born on June 7, 1952, to Bernard and Katherine Neeson. Neeson grew up in a Catholic household within a predominantly Protestant town. He has described feeling like a "second-class citizen" during this time. However, he also noted that he never felt inferior at his technical college. His interest in drama began while attending St. Patrick's College from 1963 to 1967. He also spent time as a competitive boxer, winning regional titles before age 17.

Neeson's career reached a massive breakthrough in the early 1990s. In 1993, director Steven Spielberg cast him as Oskar Schindler in the Holocaust drama Schindler's List. This role was highly competitive, as other actors like Warren Beatty had also expressed interest. Neeson's performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He also made his Broadway debut that same year in Anna Christie. This performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. He later starred in other significant historical dramas like Rob Roy and Michael Collins.

In the late 1990s, Neeson transitioned into massive blockbuster roles. In 1999, he played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. George Lucas chose Neeson because he wanted a master actor with strength.

Neeson also provided the voice for Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy. He has continued to appear in the Star Wars universe through voice work and cameos. This period marked a shift from intense dramatic roles to large-scale fantasy and science fiction.

Starting in 2008, Neeson established himself as a major action star. This change began with the action thriller series Taken. He followed this success with films like The A-Team and The Grey. He has frequently collaborated with director Jaume Collet-Serra on several action films. These include Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. This era of his career shows his ability to lead high-energy, suspenseful productions.

Neeson's life and work are deeply connected to the history of Northern Ireland. He has spoken about how the Troubles influenced his awareness of local history. He noted that seeing student protests after the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre encouraged him to learn more. He has described the history of conflict as something that is "part of my DNA." His career reflects a bridge between various artistic disciplines. He moves seamlessly between the discipline of the Broadway stage and the scale of global cinema.
