The harbor seal lives in cold ocean waters.

These seals live in the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. They can be brown, tan, or grey. Each seal has a unique pattern of spots.

This makes every seal look different.

Harbor seals have a thick layer of fat under their skin. This is called blubber. Blubber helps the seal stay warm in cold water. They like to rest on rocks, sand, or ice. These spots are called haulout sites. They use these places to stay safe from weather and predators.

A mother seal has one pup after nine months.

The pup can swim and dive just hours after birth. It drinks rich milk from its mother. After four to six weeks, the pup is weaned. This means it stops drinking milk and eats other food.

Some seals live in fresh water, too. The Ungava seal lives in Northern Quebec. This group is endangered, which means it is at risk. Most harbor seals are doing well. But some groups have fewer seals due to disease or human conflict.
