Hand sanitizer

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hand sanitizer is a helpful tool for keeping hands clean. It comes in many forms like liquid, gel, or foam. It can even be a spray, a wipe, or a cream. People use it to kill tiny living things called microorganisms. These include many types of bacteria and viruses. While washing with soap and water is usually better, sanitizer is a great backup. It is very convenient when you cannot find a sink.

Most effective sanitizers use alcohol to do their job. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using products with at least 60% alcohol. This alcohol can be ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. To use it, you must rub the gel all over your hands. You should cover your fingers, between your fingers, and even your wrists. You must rub for at least 30 seconds. Finally, you must let your hands air dry completely.

People have used alcohol to kill germs for a long time. Evidence shows it was used as an antiseptic as far back as 1363. Scientists began seeing more evidence of its use in the late 1800s. Hand sanitizers were first introduced to medical settings in 1966. These were used in places like hospitals to keep doctors safe. The products became much more popular in the early 1990s. Today, they are on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

There are many important facts about how these liquids work. Isopropyl alcohol can kill 99.99% of certain bacteria in less than 30 seconds. Some high-strength rubs with 90% alcohol are very good at fighting viruses. However, sanitizer cannot kill everything. It does not work on bacterial spores or certain viruses like norovirus. It also cannot remove harmful chemicals like pesticides from your skin. If your hands are visibly dirty or greasy, you should use soap instead.

Using sanitizer is mostly safe, but there are things to watch for. Because they contain alcohol, these gels can catch fire. You should always rub them until they are totally dry to stay safe. Some people might also find that the alcohol dries out their skin. To help with this, companies often add things like glycerol to keep skin soft. It is also very important that children do not drink hand sanitizer. It can cause alcohol poisoning, so adults should always supervise its use.
