Tincture of iodine is a helpful liquid used to kill germs. It is an antiseptic, which means it stops the growth of bacteria. This liquid is usually made of three things. It contains elemental iodine, water, and ethanol, which is a type of alcohol. Most versions have about 2% iodine. Some versions are much stronger. This liquid is very important for keeping people safe from infection.

How does this liquid work so well? Iodine does not always mix easily with water. To fix this, scientists add sodium iodide or potassium iodide. These salts help the iodine dissolve into the liquid. The alcohol also helps the iodine stay mixed in. This creates a solution that can be used on skin or in water. When it touches germs, it can stop them from causing harm. It is a clever way to make a strong cleaner.

Doctors have used this for a long time. In 1907, an Italian surgeon named Antonio Grossich used it to clean skin before surgery. His method worked very well. One study showed only a 3% infection rate with his method. Other methods had a 21% infection rate. Later, Lionel Stretton worked on this in the United Kingdom. He used a much weaker solution at Kidderminster Infirmary. He helped make this specific method popular all over the world.

There are different recipes for this liquid. The U.S. National Formulary has rules for it. One version has 1.8 to 2.2 grams of iodine in every 100 mL. It also has 2.1 to 2.6 grams of sodium iodide. This version uses 50 mL of alcohol. There is also a strong version. It has 6.8 to 7.5 grams of iodine in 100 mL. This strong version is 3.5 times more concentrated than the 2% version.

You might see this in a survival kit. It can clean small wounds on your skin. You can even use a few drops to clean drinking water. It kills many bacteria and viruses in the water. However, it does not kill all tiny parasites like Giardia. It is also not meant for eating directly. The bottles say "for external use only" because too much can be toxic. It is a very useful tool for staying healthy in many ways.
