It sits in the northwestern part of that sea. The gulf is near the coasts of northern Vietnam and China. To the east, you can find the Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island. In the north, it touches China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The coastline of Vietnam runs along the west and northwest. This line goes down to the Cồn Cỏ island. It is a shallow part of the Pacific Ocean. Most of the floor is not very deep. No part of the gulf is deeper than 100 meters.

Names for this place tell us about its history. The name Tonkin means "eastern capital." This was once the name for Hanoi. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam today. People in Vietnam and China call it the "Northern Bay." In China, the gulf is called Beibu Wan. During the French colonial era, northern Vietnam was called Tonkin. This name is different from Tokyo. Tokyo also means "eastern capital." These names help show how the region has changed over time.

History shows that this water has seen many big events. In August 1964, a major event happened here. It is known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. President Lyndon B. Johnson said North Vietnamese forces attacked American ships. This happened twice on August 4, 1964. This event led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. That resolution helped start an open war between North and South Vietnam. Later, in 1965, US troops landed at Da Nang. This was a major step in the Vietnam War.

Vietnam and China share this part of the sea. They worked together to mark their sea borders. They signed an agreement in December 2000. This deal helped define the maritime border. The agreement officially took effect on June 30, 2004.

Today, the countries still talk about their waters. In March 2024, China made a declaration about its territorial waters. Vietnam asked China to respect international law. Then, in February 2025, Vietnam announced its own lines for its waters.

Learning about the gulf helps us understand the world. It shows how geography and history stay linked. The map shows where the maritime borders sit.
