It sits near the coasts of northern Vietnam and China. To the east, you will find Hainan Island. The water here is quite shallow. Most of the ocean floor is not very deep.

The name Tonkin means "eastern capital." This was the old name for Hanoi. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam today. In Vietnam and China, the name means "Northern Bay."

Vietnam and China share this water. They signed a deal in the year 2000. This deal helped mark their sea borders. This took effect in June of 2004.

In 1964, a big event happened here. This was called the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. It involved ships from the United States. This event led to more war in Vietnam. Many more troops arrived in 1965. Today, the two countries still talk about sea lines. China and Vietnam both made new claims in 2024 and 2025. They want to show where their waters are.
