This basin is part of the Jin-Shaan Basin Belt. It is separated from the Yuncheng Basin by the Yellow River. The name Guanzhong means "within the passes." This refers to the mountain forts that once guarded the land.

The heart of the region is a flat area called the Guanzhong Plain. This is also known as the Wei River Plain. It was made by soil left behind by the Wei River. Many smaller streams also flow through this land. This soil makes the ground very good for farming. The weather has an average temperature of 15°C. It receives about 600 mm of rain each year. Because some years are dry, the plants are a mix of forests and steppes.

History began here with the Zhou dynasty. They moved to this region to stay safe from nomads. Later, the Qin state grew very strong in this land. They even built the Zhengguo Canal to help with farming. The Qin people eventually unified China for the first time. They created the Qin dynasty in the 3rd century BC. After the Qin, other great groups ruled from here. The Han and Tang dynasties both called this region their home. It was the capital for twelve different dynasties.

Many important cities sit within these borders. Xi'an is the largest city in Northwest China. It sits right in the center of the region. Other major cities include Baoji, Xianyang, Tongchuan, and Weinan. Historically, six major mountain passes protected the area. Hangu Pass was the most important one. It controlled a narrow path along the Yellow River. Other passes include Wu Pass, Xiao Pass, and Dasan Pass. Later, leaders added Tong Pass and Jinsuo Pass.

Today, the region remains a very important place. It connects the history of old China to the modern world. The land shows how rivers and mountains shape where people live. For a long time, it was the center of power and wealth. Even though the economic center later moved south, the history remains. You can still see how the mountains and rivers created a safe home. It is a place where many great stories began.
