The city sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is positioned at the meeting point of four rivers. These are the Darro, the Genil, the Monachil, and the Beiro. A Roman settlement called Iliberis once existed here. It became a Roman colony in 44 BC. By 27 BC, it was a municipium named Florentia Iliberritana. Scholars still debate how much the old Roman town connects to modern Granada. Some believe a significant Roman town sat on the Albaicín hill.

In the 11th century, Granada became a major city of Al-Andalus. Al-Andalus was a region under Muslim rule. The Zirid dynasty helped this growth. The Zirids were a Berber group from North Africa. They were granted control of the Elvira province. The leader Zawi ben Ziri is considered the founder of the city. He moved the residence from a low plain to a higher area. This higher ground was easier to protect from attacks. This move helped transform the former Jewish town into a powerful city.

The city grew with many different architectural styles. The Zirids built a citadel called the al-Qaṣaba al-Qadīma. This is now the Albaicín neighborhood.
