The city's history began with very early human presence. Neanderthal remains date back to approximately 35,000 BC. Pre-urban settlements existed near the mouth of the Guadalquivir by the 8th century BC. The Romans conquered the area in 206 BC. A new settlement was founded around 169 or 152 BC.

Under their rule, the city became a major center of learning. It grew to be the second-largest city in Europe by the 10th century. Historians estimate the population reached between 100,000 and 1,000,000 people during this era. Some estimates suggest it reached 400,000 people around 1000 AD.

The Umayyad period brought great scientific and cultural advancement. The city hosted over 80 libraries and institutions of learning. Scholars studied medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and botany. This knowledge far exceeded what was found in the rest of Europe. The economy was also very prosperous. The city produced leather, metalwork, glazed tiles, and textiles. It also traded agricultural goods like fruits, vegetables, and silk.

Political instability eventually weakened the Caliphate. A major crisis in the early 11th century led to state collapse. This period of civil war is known as the Fitna. In 1236, Christian forces captured the city following a siege. Córdoba then became part of the Crown of Castile. The Great Mosque was converted into a Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
