They were important members of the therapsid group. Therapsids are a group of animals that eventually led to mammals. Gorgonopsians rose to become apex predators in their environments. The anatomy of a gorgonopsian was built for hunting. They possessed long and narrow skulls. Their most famous feature was their elongated upper canine teeth. These teeth acted like sabre-like weapons for stabbing or slashing. To use these teeth, they needed an enormous gape. A gape is how wide an animal can open its mouth. Gorgonopsians could open their jaws in excess of 90 degrees. They did not need to unhinge their jaws to do this. Most species had five incisors in the upper jaw. They also had four incisors on the bottom. Their postcanine teeth, which are the teeth behind the canines, were often reduced or missing. Some species, like Clelandina, lacked these teeth entirely.

Scientists believe these predators used a specific hunting strategy. They likely used a bite-and-retreat tactic to catch large prey. First, they would ambush a target and deliver a debilitating bite. Then, they would follow the animal from a safe distance. They waited until the injuries exhausted the prey. Once the target was weak, the gorgonopsian would grapple it. Finally, they would deliver a killing bite.

Their teeth were polyphyodonts. This means their teeth grew continuously throughout their lives. If a large canine broke during a hunt, a new one was already growing to replace it. This ensured they always had functional weapons for hunting.

Gorgonopsians varied greatly in size over time. In the Middle Permian, they were quite small. By the Upper Permian, they reached bear-like proportions. The largest genus was Inostrancevia. It could reach a skull length of up to 1 meter. The Rubidgeinae were the latest and most robust group. They could produce especially powerful bites. While large species were impressive, small gorgonopsians remained abundant until extinction. Some scientists think these smaller fossils might actually be juvenile specimens of larger animals. This makes identifying specific species difficult for paleontologists.

The biology of gorgonopsians shows a mix of traits. They had a parasagittal gait. This means their limbs were vertically oriented and moved parallel to the spine. The history of gorgonopsian discovery began in the late 19th century. The oldest known specimen comes from the Spanish island of Mallorca. Most fossils are found in the Karoo Supergroup of southern Africa. This includes areas in South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Malawi. Fossils have also been found in Niger, Russia, and China. These regions were semi-arid with highly seasonal rainfall. Because many species look similar, the taxonomy of the group has changed often. Researchers have had to perform many revisions to correctly name the different genera.

The extinction of the gorgonopsians was caused by massive environmental changes. They disappeared during the Permian–Triassic extinction event. This occurred at the very end of the Permian period. Major volcanic activity created the Siberian Traps. This activity caused a massive spike in greenhouse gases. The resulting temperature spike led to rapid aridification, or drying out. The world also faced acid rain and frequent wildfires. These conditions caused the breakdown of the ozone layer. Gorgonopsians could not survive these shifts. Eventually, the large predatory niches they once held were taken over by archosaurs. This group includes the ancestors of modern crocodilians and dinosaurs.
